Google is expected to launch the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones in October 2023. Recent leaks have suggested that the upcoming handsets may ditch the physical SIM card slots in favor of eSIM.

An eSIM is a digital SIM card that is embedded in the phone. It allows users to connect to a cellular network without the need for a physical SIM card. eSIMs are becoming increasingly popular, as they offer a number of advantages over traditional SIM cards. For example, eSIMs are more compact and durable, and they can be easily switched between different carriers.

The leaks about the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro come from tipster Mishaal Rahman. Rahman claims that the renders of the phones published by Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) are missing SIM card slots on the left side. This suggests that the phones may only support eSIM.

However, it is important to note that these leaks have not been confirmed by Google. It is possible that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will still have physical SIM card slots in some regions.

If the leaks are accurate, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro would be the first Google smartphones to support eSIM only. Apple launched the eSIM-only iPhone 14 series in the US last year. However, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models are available with physical SIM card slots in several other regions.

The adoption of eSIM is still in its early stages, but it is growing rapidly. eSIMs offer a number of advantages over traditional SIM cards, and they are likely to become more common in the future.

Here are some of the benefits of eSIM:

  •  They are more compact and durable than traditional SIM cards.
  • They can be easily switched between different carriers.
  • They allow users to have multiple phone numbers on the same device.
  • They can be used to activate a device remotely.

If you are considering buying the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, it is important to check whether your carrier supports eSIM. You can also check the Google Store website to see if the phones will be available with physical SIM card slots in your region.
